Academic Assembly Update

The governance chairs coordinated future steps in review process of the Governance Coordinating Body proposal. The Blackboard Community Discussion Forum will be open until March 5, 2019. The chairs and the campus Executive Committees will summarize the issues arising from the Forum discussions and present them at the February meetings of the Governance bodies, possibly conducting surveys of faculty. In March 2019, face-to-face tri-campus fora with simulcast option will be conducted to solicit further feedback.

Grant Academic Standards met on 12/4/18. Discussed updates from the four working subgroups of CASC:

1. Academic Integrity - No main updates because the last meeting was canceled.
2. Absences and Attendance - Workgroup started conducting research on the policies of the other community colleges.
3. Faculty Authored Textbooks - Moving forward with compiling a short list of points to explore, such as department review, OER, potential conflict of interests, and others.
4. Withdrawal policy - Workgroup compiled research on the other SUNY Community College Withdrawal policies. Met with Directors of financial aid and veteran's affairs to discuss the varied implications of the current policy on our students. Compiling data questions for OPIE.

Also discussed addition of a Dean's List for Part-Time students. Overwhelming majority of the other SUNY CC's have this distinction.

The Technology Committee met on December 4, 2018. The committee welcomed two student members from the SGA: Jade Antoine and Sheimyrah Mighty.

The planned migration of email from college servers to Microsoft (cloud) server has been occurring by department. The online tools and application through Microsoft 365 (OneDrive, Word, etc.) online will be available at a later date. The Grant Campus Computing website provides information for faculty and students regarding services, policies, FAQs and department-specific labs.

Because of repeated issues with Blackboard/browsers compatibility reported from the various departments, a proposal to establish a Blackboard Effectiveness Committee was made by Dave Dujmovic and Kerry Carlson. The subcommittee would be responsible for documenting the various complaints and resolutions regarding BlackBoard and compile a report on a semester and/or yearly basis. The report would then be submitted to the College Computer Council. The matter was tabled until the next meeting for further discussion.

Finally, the College Computing Council will be developing a college-wide survey regarding technology needs. The co-chairs of the campus committees will assist in the coordinating the survey for their campus. Technology committee members may also be asked to support the survey and provide assistance.

The deadline to apply for Grant campus Spring 2019 scholarships is Friday, December 28. Please encourage students to apply.

The committee has not met since the last Assembly meeting.

The Committee will not meet in December but it is preparing the Annual Developmental Studies Workshop to be held on March 9th, 2019. Anybody willing to present should respond by December 17th with titles and descriptions due at the end of January.

The Committee met on December 6, 2018. It considered the following items.

Curriculum Updates

• COL 110: Service Learning Through College Seminar - This course passed and will be offered fall 2019.
• Special Topics: Career Exploration will eventually be offered college-wide. Discovery Long Island will start in the fall on the Grant campus.
• Theme-based College Seminar - COL 100: This course will only be offered on the Grant campus

Curriculum Proposal - Career Exploration

• The committee agreed that the Learning Outcomes for the course should be re-visited. The suggestion was to possibly look at the Learning Outcomes for BUS 115 to help further revise.
• A Master's Degree is required to teach the course, but a Master's Degree in what?
• More detailed expectations should be listed in relation to development of work force expectations.
• Should the first learning outcome be split into two separate learning outcomes?
• There is a difference between the catalog description vs. course description.
• How are the Learning Outcomes measured or assessed?
• The committee also suggested that this course be offered as a 3 credit course.

Winter Workshop II for Terrific Teachers

• Agenda: Event will be from 9-1 in the LRC on the Grant campus. Bagels and coffee will be offered.
• We need more round tables
• Presenters: Mental Health, Cornell Notes, Integrating Career Exploration, Degree Works, Blackboard/OER
• Suffolk Trivia Kahoot! - Beginning activity using trivia questions about the college. Need 10 questions.
• Items were collected for the winter basket.

Campus Committee Updates

• Faye Lourenso has used OER Minnesota with her course. The students enjoyed using is and it is an updated, user-friendly resource. The Eastern campus will look to use OER Minnesota with College Seminar courses in the spring.
• Dawn Tracy-Hanley is putting together a College Seminar Task Force on the Grant campus. The first meeting will be December 10th, 2018.

The committee has not met since the last Assembly meeting.

The committee met on Friday November 30. The following items were discussed:

• Blackbaud acquired AcademicWorks. Because Blackbaud sounds so similar to Blackboard, the scholarship online system will be called something else in the future once the changeover to the name Blackbaud is official.
• The committee reviewed various scholarship policies and procedures.
• The year 2018 had the most scholarships awarded than any other year.
• The committee discussed moving the scholarship awarding cycle to once a year instead of twice a year.
• The committee also discussed donor profile updates, newly established scholarships, and scholarship communication plans.

On Thursday, December 13th we will have our Fall 2018 performing arts program, THE AMERICAN FILM MUSICAL: SONG AND DANCE at 6:00 pm in the Van Nostrand Theater.

The program is a celebration of the arts, as well as a final performance for our Musical Theatre Workshop, Dance in Popular Culture, and Broadway Dance classes.
